Investigation and evaluation of upload and download allocation strategies for P2P video streaming
Publication type:
bachelorsthesis

Abstract:
The interest in video streaming over the Internet is highly increasing. Peer-to-peer systems are a good opportunity to deal with the consequentially increasing bandwidth demand, while posing challenges in their design. The optimal allocation of the upload and download capacities of a peer is yet unknown and a major challenge that can significantly influence the performance of a system. This thesis presents the design and implementation of seven peer selection criteria in LiveShift, in order to investigate new peer selection opportunities. The concept of the solution is to compare peers with the proposed criteria and give priority to those that perform better. The evaluation results show that there is more than one feasible approach for upload and download allocation and that the proposed selection criteria have potential and allow further investigations.
