Co-evolution of Morphology and Controller of a Simulated Underactuated Quadruped Robot using Evolutionary Algorithms

bachelorsthesis

For this thesis, a framework for co‐evolution of body and controller parameters for a virtual underactuated quadruped robot has been developed. To evaluate a robot, its travelled distance from the starting point is measured. Two algorithms are available to select the parents for the next generation: A leaders only algorithm selecting only the best individuals and a roulette wheel algorithm giving every individual a certain chance to become parent. The reproduction is done by mutation of randomly chosen parameters of the parent. Experiments on the model based on AI Lab’s Puppy II robot revealed that the influence of the leg length is crucial. But also the optimization of only controller settings and spring affected parameters results in a 56% fitness improvement compared to the initial robot model.
