Ubiquitous GIS - Visualization and interaction with 3D terrain on GPS assisted handheld devices

mastersthesis

Traditional ubiquitous GPS navigation systems usually provide only 2D cartographic information. However, to enhance spatial perception, understanding and orientation, the user needs a 3D view of its current geographical location that better matches the real world. Because of the limited computational capabilities and the lack of 3D graphics hardware support on handheld devices, a client-server terrain display system was implemented. The client running on a handheld device sends visualization requests based on its GPS positioning data and user input to the remote terrain rendering server. The 3D display generation server in turn generates the visualization of the requested view on demand and returns it to the client. The system incorporates a number of components such as user-interaction, GPS data acquisition and a networking protocol.
