Abstract:
Current research in the field of evolutionary robotics is dealing with the evolution of control structures for robots as well as with the co-evolution of robot morphologies. As the evolution in the real world is extremely time-consuming, simulations are used to evolve the controller in a simulated environment. The fittest individuals are taken and tested in the real world. The Artificial Intelligence Lab of the University of Zurich is conducting research on the Embryogenic Evolutionary System (EES), a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. ESS will be able to evolve and grow different types of modular robotic systems from single cells as well as controllers for existing robotics platforms. This diploma thesis is part of work package 2 which is concerned with the design and extension of a programming library to simulate the complex interaction between biological cells. The product of this diploma thesis is the core library for the implementation of evolutionary systems with tight integration of physical simulations, the pexlibpackage. This package consist of a development environment, scripts for building evolutionary applications, tools for deploying applications to a cluster environment and a library for handling the communication between clients and the server. The component based design of the library and the modularity of the build scripts assure extendability and reusability. A further goal of this diploma thesisis, to provide a tool-suite that shorten the development time of evolutionary systems and helps to enforce designing for reusability.
