Simulation and Visualization of Tornadoes
Simulation and Visualization of Tornadoes
Publication type:
mastersthesis

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis was to examine the requirements and possibilities in regard to the numerical simulation of the tornado phenomenon and thus find an applicable, straightforward way to enhance the pre-existing meshfree, particle-based fluid simulation. The crucial physical factors leading to this natural phenomenon needed to be considered and integrated since it is based on real physical conditions. Based on the tornado-scale approach, which only simulates the vortex of a tornado and its immediate surroundings, a set of boundary conditions was developed to evoke the desired uplifting rotational flow motion. Various shear wind profiles and random change in wind speed during the simulation were applied to produce tornadoes exhibiting similar shapes as observed in nature. Furthermore, the adiabatic condensation process was implemented. Due to this meteorological procedure and the induced fluid motion, the simulated tornado is made visible to the human eye in a physically-based manner. In addition to hitherto implemented visualization techniques, a method to illustrate the trails of the particles was developed to gain further insight into the dynamics of the fluid.
